De allergrootste uitdaging in de strijd tegen klimaatverandering? Energieneutraal vastgoed in 2050. Eerlijk is eerlijk: dat is sneller dan je denkt. De sector is verantwoordelijk voor maar liefst 40 procent van de totale CO2-uitstoot. Gelukkig doen we er bij Healthy Workers iedere dag álles aan om die omlaag te brengen. Hoe? Door gebouwen autonoom te maken. Maar om onze systemen slimmer, sneller en sterker te maken, is tijd én geld nodig. Daarom helpt het Just Transition Fund ons de goede kant op. En aangezien we niet de enige zijn met plannen voor de energietransitie, zijn we supertrots dat we deze subsidie mogen ontvangen.

Europa klimaatneutraal

Om Europa klimaatneutraal te maken, heeft elk gebouw een roadmap to 2050. Daarvoor zijn grote investeringen nodig, en flink wat man- en wilskracht. Maar wat als we nu eens beginnen met kijken naar wat er al is, en hoe we dát kunnen verduurzamen: welk deel van het probleem lossen we daar dan mee op? Want door gebouwen autonoom te maken, lossen wij al 5 tot 10 procent van de CO₂-problematiek op – zónder harde investeringen te doen.

We komen in de vastgoedsector namelijk gigantisch veel technici tekort, dat is geen geheim. En de handen die al beschikbaar zijn, hebben we nodig voor grotere duurzaamheidsuitdagingen. Denk maar aan renovaties, en ontwerp en vernieuwing van installaties.

Fonds voor vernieuwing

Met het Just Transition Fund (JTF) draagt de Europese Unie bij aan een rechtvaardige energietransitie. Door in slimme technologieën en toekomstbestendige ideeën te investeren, biedt het fonds ruimte voor initiatieven die verduurzaming versnellen. Het geld wordt ingezet voor verschillende doeleinden. Denk aan projecten die nieuwe werkgelegenheid creëren, werknemers omscholen, economische diversificatie stimuleren en de afhankelijkheid van fossiele brandstof omlaag brengen.

Vooruitgang kost geld

Maar om te zien waar verbeterkansen liggen, moet je eerst weten waar je staat. Oftewel: je wilt inzicht in je verbruik. Daar zijn wij voor. En niet alleen voor dat: we optimaliseren je gebouwen ook, waardoor je energiebesparingen tot wel 60 procent bereikt. Een duurzame investering dus. Maar om onze systemen perfect te laten draaien, is constante technische innovatie cruciaal. En daarvoor is geld onmisbaar.

Het zit alleen zo: machinelearning is nooit een lineair proces. Stop er honderd uur van je tijd – en geld – in, en je hebt nog geen idee wat het gaat opleveren. Een behoorlijk risico. Toch moeten we blijven inzetten op onderzoek en ontwikkeling, zodat ons product topshelf blijft. De technologie van kunstmatige intelligentie gaat razendsnel vooruit, en daarom is subsidie essentieel voor verdere verfijning van onze systemen. Alleen zo halen we de klimaatdoelstellingen van het Parijsakkoord.

Budget vol mogelijkheden

Om panden in heel Nederland zo snel mogelijk autonoom te maken, gebruiken we het geld van het JTF op verschillende manieren. Zo geeft het budget ons de ruimte om de knapste koppen aan te nemen, waaronder de uitblinkers op de universiteit. Omdat artificial intelligence en machinelearning een relatief nieuw vakgebied is, hoeft universiteit-talent helemaal niet onder te doen aan kenners in het werkveld. De eerste masterstudenten die bij ons stage liepen, zijn hier nu zelfs al fulltime aan de slag. Zo creëren we niet alleen meer werkgelegenheid, maar zorgen we er ook nog eens voor dat Healthy Workers haar doelen sneller behaalt.

Samen met studenten van de VU werken we aan een machinelearning-model dat het binnenklimaat van een gebouw kan voorspellen. Onze eerste mijlpaal? Een ontwerp dat het klimaat voor de komende 24 uur kan voorspellen. Het is zó accuraat, dat we het wetenschappelijk gaan publiceren.

Focus verleggen

Bovendien verandert de technische markt razendsnel, dus vanzelfsprekend is er andere kennis nodig dan tien jaar geleden. Daarom scholen we ook mensen om: zo verzekeren we technici van werk – óók in de aankomende tien jaar. Daarnaast helpt het JTF ons om linkjes te leggen met bijvoorbeeld Techport: een triple helix organisatie in de regio IJmond. Met deze samenwerking willen we de eerste groene industriezone van Nederland worden. Zo laten we Healthy Workers groeien, neemt de werkgelegenheid toe én vergroenen we de wereld.

Chapter 2: Significant sustainability subsidy for Healthy Workers

The greatest challenge in the battle against climate change? Achieving energy-neutral real estate by 2050. That's sooner than you might think. The sector is responsible for 40 percent of the total CO2 emissions. Luckily, Healthy Workers is doing everything possible to bring that number down. But to make our systems smarter, faster, and stronger, we need time and money. That's where the Just Transition Fund comes in, helping us move in the right direction. And since Healthy Workers is not the only one with plans for energy transition, we are proud to receive this subsidy.

Europe Climate Neutral

Every building needs a roadmap to 2050 to make Europe climate-neutral. This requires significant investments and a considerable amount of workforce and determination. But what if we start by looking at what already exists and how we can make that sustainable: what part of the problem can we solve with that? By making buildings autonomous, we already solve 5 to 10 percent of the CO₂ issue – without making significant investments.

The real estate sector faces a shortage of technicians, which is no secret. All available hands are needed for more extensive sustainability challenges, such as renovations and the design and innovation of installations.

Fund for renewal

The Just Transition Fund (JTF) contributes to a fair energy transition in the European Union. By investing in intelligent technologies and future-proof ideas, the fund supports initiatives that accelerate sustainability. The money is used for various purposes, including projects that create new employment, retrain workers, stimulate economic diversification, and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

Progress comes at a cost

To identify improvement opportunities, you need to know where you stand. In other words, you want insight into your consumption. That's where we come in. And not just for that: we also optimize your buildings, achieving energy savings of up to 60 percent. However, constant technical innovation is crucial to run our systems perfectly, and for that, money is indispensable.

The catch is that machine learning is never a linear process. Invest a hundred hours of your time – and money – and you still have no idea what it will yield—a considerable risk. Nevertheless, we must continue to focus on research and development to keep our product top-shelve. Artificial intelligence technology is advancing rapidly, making subsidies essential for further refinement of our systems. It is the only way we can achieve the climate goals of the Paris Agreement.

Budget full of possibilities

To make buildings across the Netherlands autonomous as quickly as possible, we use the JTF funds in various ways. The budget allows us to hire the brightest minds, including top-performing university students. Since artificial intelligence and machine learning are relatively new fields, university talent can compete with industry experts. The first master's students who interned with us are now working full-time. This not only creates more employment but also ensures that Healthy Workers achieves its goals faster.

Working with VU students, we are developing a machine-learning model that can predict the indoor climate of a building. Our first milestone? A design that can predict the climate for the next 24 hours. It's so accurate that we plan to publish it scientifically.

Shifting focus

Moreover, the technical market is changing rapidly, so naturally, different knowledge is needed than ten years ago. That's why we also retrain people to ensure job security for technicians – even in the next ten years. Additionally, the JTF helps us establish connections with organizations like Techport, a triple helix organization in the IJmond region. With this collaboration, we aim to become the first green industrial zone in the Netherlands. This way, we enable Healthy Workers to grow, increase employment, and contribute to greening the world.
